2024 Akwesasne Indigenous Fashion Show

Celebrating Culture and Creativity at the 2024 Akwesasne Indigenous Fashion Show

As we step into another year of celebrating Indigenous art, fashion, and culture, I am thrilled to share the highlights of the 8th Annual Akwesasne Indigenous Fashion Show, held on December 7th at the Tsi Snaihne Recreation Center in Quebec. This event is not just a showcase; it’s a movement—a celebration of resilience, creativity, and community.

A Spotlight on Talent

This year, the show featured 15 visionary clothing designers and many talented accessory creators, including beaders, leatherworkers, and more. These artists brought their heritage to life through breathtaking designs that seamlessly wove traditional craftsmanship with modern trends. From intricate beadwork to stunning contemporary silhouettes, every piece was a masterpiece.

Our runway sparkled with the confidence and beauty of over a 100 models, who brought these designs to life. They were supported by a dedicated team of 10 hair and makeup artists, ensuring every detail was perfect. Three mesmerizing dance performances added rhythm and energy, connecting the audience to the rich cultural roots of the show.

Building Community and Connections

The Akwesasne Indigenous Fashion Show isn’t just about fashion—it’s about fostering connections. This year’s event involved collaborations with four local businesses and five stores selling Indigenous products, giving attendees an opportunity to explore and support local artisans.

We were proud to welcome over 200 tourists from across the United States and Canada, all of whom came to experience the vibrant spirit of Akwesasne. The energy in the room was electric, and the feedback has been overwhelming.

A Labor of Love

Organizing an event of this magnitude takes a village, and I couldn’t be prouder of the 15-member committee who worked tirelessly to make it a success. From decorating to coaching, each member brought unique skills and passion to the table. Their dedication ensured that every detail was flawless and that our vision became a reality.

Looking Ahead

As a designer, I am deeply inspired by the talent and stories showcased at this event. It reminds me why I do what I do—celebrating our culture through fashion and sharing it with the world. The 2024 Akwesasne Indigenous Fashion Show was a testament to the power of collaboration, artistry, and pride in our heritage.

To everyone who attended, participated, or supported from afar—thank you. Your energy and enthusiasm keep this event thriving. Here’s to continuing this journey of celebrating Indigenous culture, one stitch, one bead, and one runway at a time.

Stay tuned for what’s next, and remember—fashion is more than what you wear; it’s the story you tell.

With gratitude,
Tisha Thompson
